Evagrius's teachings were deeply influenced by the desert spirituality of the early Church. He emphasized the importance of inner purity, humility, and the renunciation of worldly desires. He also identified eight corresponding virtues that can help the soul overcome these thoughts: temperance, chastity, liberality, joy, peace, zeal, humility, and love.

Evagrius's writings on prayer were particularly influential. He believed that prayer was not simply a matter of asking God for things, but a means of communing with God and experiencing his presence. He taught that prayer should be practiced with humility, perseverance, and purity of heart.
